Puzzle for November 1st, 2009

One Sunday a month, the Sunday Puzzazz will be super-sized. These puzzles are a bigger challenge, so they will take you longer to solve. Unlike most puzzles on Puzzazz, the answers to these puzzles are not available the next day. You'll have to solve them to get the solution.

The following clues define eight of the nine words in a phonetic word ladder, in which each word differs from the previous word by a single phoneme and with a different spelling. As in a traditional word ladder, no three consecutive words change the same phoneme. Figure out the words, put them in order, and enter the ninth, unclued word.
